SERIAL ENTREPRENEUR PAYPALS IT FORWARD

ELON MUSK, W’97

ELON MUSK always wanted to change the world in positive ways. Now he’s ready for new worlds.

“One of the great in-ventions of any intelligent species is expanding beyond their planet,” he told USA Today. Thus, Space X, Musk’s company, proposes to make space travel and launching of payloads at a cut rate to current rockets.

Musk has always been interested in technical challenges, and he’s accustomed to succeeding. Fascinated by video games as a pre-teen, he created “Blast Star,” which was more or less a combination of two of the more popular games of the era, “Asteroid” and “Space Invaders.” He sold “Blast Star” for $500, he said, which is several zeroes to the right less than his next two businesses.

He took some of that money and helped found PayPal, a system of transferring money on the Internet securely that even the smallest online businesses could use.

In his early 20s, he started Zip2, which included a full online publication system that interfaced with a newspaper’s legacy mainframe, maps, directions, and e-mail. He sold it to Compaq for $307 million. He took some of that money and helped found PayPal, a system of transferring money on the Internet securely that even the smallest online businesses could use. He then sold PayPal to eBay for more than a billion dollars.

With the $300 million he himself realized from the two Internet sales, he decided to follow his lifelong interest in space travel and founded Space X, saying that he was not competing with high-cost contractors like Boeing, since he was building the equivalent of a truck, while they were looking to be Ferraris. The thought, said Musk, was to bring more people into space and use it for human ecological growth, not just deliver military objects into the cosmos.

He is also a booster of clean power as chairman and the lead investor in two cutting-edge alternative energy companies: Tesla Motors and Solar City. Solar City’s goal, he told Wharton Alumni Magazine in 2006, is to “bring solar power to everyone.” He continued, “The U.S. market is the biggest in the world, and I think that if the U.S. uses 25 percent of the world’s energy, that’s a big market.”

Tesla Motors’s products are less grand but more spectacular, beginning with an electric sports car with a 3.9 second 0-60 mph acceleraton and 135 mpg equivalent. When production rolls out in December 2007, Musk plans to own and drive the very first one.

At the age of 17, Mr. Elon Musk was accepted into Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, for undergraduate study. In 1992, after spending two years at Queen’s University, Mr. Elon Musk transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where in May 1997 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the College of Arts and Sciences, and a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from the Wharton School of Business. Mr. Elon Musk extended his studies for one year to finish the second bachelor’s degree and met Adeodato Gregory Ressi di Cervia, who attended college together at the University of Pennsylvania where they spent time as housemates. Mr Elon Musk and Ressi opened an unofficial “nightclub” at their house, boasting as many as 500 patrons on a single night.elon college

In 1995, at age 24, Mr. Elon Musk moved to California and begun his Ph.D. at Stanford University, in applied physics and materials science  but left the program after two days to pursue his entrepreneurial aspirations, in the areas of the internet, renewable energy, and outer space.

In 1995, Mr. Elon Musk and his younger brother, Kimbal, started Zip2, a web software company, with money raised from a small group of angel investors that trusted and believed in Mr. Elon Musk. The company developed and marketed an Internet “City Guide” for the newspaper publishing industry. Mr. Elon Musk obtained contracts with The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune.  Mr. Elon Musk persuaded the board of directors to abandon plans for a merger with CitySearch and work with them. While at Zip2, Mr. Elon Musk wanted to become its CEO; however, none of the board members would allow it. Mr. Elon Musk proposed a deal with Compaq and they acquired Zip2 for $307 million USD, in cash and $34 million USD, in stock options in 1999. Mr Elon Musk then sold the shares and received $22 million USD for his 7 percent share from the sale.

One year later, the company merged with Confinity, which had a money-transfer service called PayPal. The merged companies was renamed PayPal in 2001.

Mr. Elon Musk in October 2000, gave up his role as CEO, but still sat on the board, dur to a disagreement over Mr. Elon Musk’s desire to move PayPal’s Unix-based infrastructure to a more secure network, like Microsoft Windows, but it was challenged and Elon did not want the company to fail or watch the security of its members to be compromised.  In October 2002, PayPal was acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion USD. Mr. Elon Musk received a modest sum of $165 million USD, because he owned 11.7% of PayPal’s shares.

In or around 2001, Mr. Elon Musk conceptualized “Mars Oasis”, a project to land a miniature experimental greenhouse on the planet Mars, containing food crops growing on Martian regolith, in an attempt to regain public interest in space exploration. (Martian soil is the fine regolith found on the surface of Mars. Its properties can differ significantly from those of terrestrial soil, including its toxicity due to the presence of perchlorates. (a chemical compound containing the perchlorate ion, ClO− ₄. The majority of perchlorates are produced commercially. Perchlorate salts are mainly used for propellants, exploiting properties as powerful oxidizing agents and to control static electricity in food packaging) The term Martian soil typically refers to the finer fraction of regolith)

For the first time, we have a mostly reusable rocket with enough power to deliver large payloads to other planets. One peculiarity of the Falcon Heavy is its complement of 27 engines, which seems like it would be unnecessarily complicated. The Falcon Heavy has the most engines of any rocket ever to reach orbit. 27 Merlin engines on the Falcon Heavy.

SpaceX

In seven years, SpaceX designed the family of Falcon launch vehicles and the Dragon multipurpose spacecraft. In September 2008, SpaceX’s Falcon 1 rocket became the first privately funded liquid-fueled vehicle to put a satellite into Earth orbit. On May 25, 2012, the SpaceX Dragon vehicle berthed with the ISS, making history as the first commercial company to launch and berth a vehicle to the International Space Station.

SpaceX and Mr. Elon Musk for the first time in history, achieved success of orbital rockets and thus making it a significant step towards “rocket re-usability” by lowering the costs of access to space. Mr. Elon Musk’s first stage recovery of the Falcon9, was replicated several times, in 2016, by landing on an autonomous spaceport drone ship named “Of Course I Still Love You” or “OCISLY” the ocean-based recovery platform. By the end of 2017, SpaceX and Mr. Elon Musk had landed and recovered the first stage of 16 missions, where a landing and recovery were successful, including all 14 attempts in 2017.

Perhaps, 20 out of 42 first stage Falcon 9 boosters have been recovered overall, since the Falcon 9 maiden flight in 2010. SpaceX and Mr. Elon Musk has launched 18 successful Falcon 9 flights, more than doubling their highest achievements of the previous 8 years.

On February 6, 2018, SpaceX successfully launched the Falcon Heavy.

SEE THE LAUNCH HERE

Following its first test launch, Falcon Heavy is now the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two. With the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lb)—a mass greater than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel–Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost. Falcon Heavy draws upon the proven heritage and reliability of Falcon 9. Its first stage is composed of three Falcon 9 nine-engine cores whose 27 Merlin engines together generate more than 5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, equal to approximately eighteen 747 aircraft. Only the Saturn V moon rocket, last flown in 1973, delivered more payload to orbit. Falcon Heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space and restores the possibility of flying missions with crew to the Moon or Mars.

The Falcon Heavy is the fourth-highest capacity rocket by a factor of 2, that has ever been built (after Saturn V, Energia and N1) and the most powerful rocket in operation as of 2018. The inaugural mission carried a Tesla Roadster belonging to Mr. Elon Musk.

Mr. Elon Musk was influenced by Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series and views space exploration as an important step in preserving and expanding the consciousness of human life. Musk said that multi-planetary life may serve as a hedge against threats to the survival of the human species.

An asteroid or a super volcano could destroy us, and we face risks the dinosaurs never saw: an engineered virus, inadvertent creation of a micro black hole, catastrophic global warming or some as-yet-unknown technology could spell the end of us. Humankind evolved over millions of years, but in the last sixty years atomic weaponry created the potential to extinguish ourselves. Sooner or later, we must expand life beyond this green and blue ball–or go extinct.

Mr. Elon Musk’s goal is to reduce the cost of human spaceflight by a factor of 10. In a 2011 interview, he said he hopes to send humans to Mars’ surface within 10-20 years.  Mr. Elon Musk stated that he wants to establish a Mars colony by 2040, with a population of 80,000 but since Mars’ atmosphere lacks oxygen, all transportation would have to be electric (electric cars, electric trains, Hyperloop, electric aircraft). Mr. Elon Musk stated in June 2016 that the first unmanned flight of the larger Mars Colonial Transporter (MCT) spacecraft is aimed for departure to the red planet in 2022, to be followed by the first manned MCT Mars flight departing in 2024. In September 2016, Musk revealed details of his architecture to explore and colonize Mars. By 2016, Musk’s private trust holds 54% of SpaceX stock, equivalent to 78% of voting shares. In late 2017, SpaceX unveiled the design for its next-generation launch vehicle and spacecraft system–BFR–that would support all SpaceX launch service provider capabilities with a single set of very large vehicles: LEO- Lower Earth Orbit, Earth-orbit, Lunar-orbit, interplanetary missions, and even intercontinental passenger transport on Earth, and totally replace the Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy and Dragon vehicles in the 2020s. The BFR will have a 9-meter (30 ft) core diameter. Significant development on the vehicles began in 2017, while the new rocket engine development began in 2012.

Tesla

Tesla, Inc. (originally Tesla Motors) was incorporated in July 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, who financed the company until the Series A round of funding.

Both men played active roles in the company’s early development prior to Mr. Elon Musk’s involvement. Mr. Eon Musk led the Series A round of investment in February 2004, joining Tesla’s board of directors as its chairman. Mr. Elon Musk took the opportunity for him to have an active role within the company, overseeing the Tesla Roadster product design, in/at a more detailed level and distanced himself from the day-to-day business operations.

Image result for 2008 financial issuesFollowing the financial crisis in 2008, and knowing the company well, Mr. Elon Musk assumed leadership of the company as CEO and headed the department as product architect, a position he still holds today. Tesla Motors first built the electric sports car, Tesla Roadster in 2008, with modest sales of about 2,500 vehicles spading to 31 countries. Mr. Elon Musk and Tesla began delivery of its four-door Model S sedan in June 2012. Mr. Elon Musk and Tesla unveiled its third product, the Model X, a SUV/minivan, in February 2012; however, seven months later, the Model X launch was in September 2015. In addition to its own cars, Mr. Elon Musk and Tesla sold their state of the art electric powertrain systems. Mr. Elon Musk’s incredible incite was able to bring together other auto makers as long-term investors in Tesla.

Mr. Elon Musk’s annual salary is one dollar, similar to that of Steve Jobs and other CEOs; the remainder of his compensation is in the form of stock and performance-based bonuses.

Mr. Elon Musk and Tesla has allowed its technology in patents to be used by anyone, as long as they are used, in good faith, in a bid to entice automobile manufacturers to speed up development of electric cars and save earths environment. “The unfortunate reality is electric car programs (or programs for any vehicle that doesn’t burn hydrocarbons) at the major manufacturers are small to non-existent, constituting an average of far less than 1% of their total vehicle sales,” Mr. Elon Musk and hopes this will change by 2020.

SolarCity

Mr. Elon Musk provided the initial concept and financial capital for SolarCity, which was then co-founded in 2006 by his cousins Lyndon and Peter Rive. By 2013, SolarCity was the second largest provider of solar power systems in the United States. SolarCity was acquired by Tesla, Inc. in 2016 and is currently a wholly owned subsidiary of Tesla. SolarCity and Tesla will help combat global warming. In 2012, Mr. Elon Musk announced that SolarCity and Tesla are collaborating to use electric vehicle batteries to smooth the impact of rooftop solar on the power grid, with the program going live in 2013. On June 17, 2014, Mr. Elon Musk committed to building a SolarCity advanced production facility in Buffalo, New York, that would triple the size of the largest solar plant in the United States. Mr. Elon Musk stated the plant will be “one of the single largest solar panel production plants in the world,” and it will be followed by one or more even bigger facilities in subsequent years. We are seeking more investors for future projects.

Hyperloop

On July 20, 2017, Mr. Elon Musk announced that he had gotten “verbal government approval” to build a hyperloop from New York City to Washington D.C, stopping in both Philadelphia and Baltimore. However, the New York City Transit Authority, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, Maryland Transit Administration, United States Department of Homeland Security, as well as the mayors of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. stated that they are unaware of any such agreement.

BRICKS

In typical tunneling projects, excavated dirt is shipped offsite to disposal locations. This process is costly, time-consuming, noisy, and can be environmentally hazardous. The Boring Company has developed technologies to recycle the earth into useful bricks to be used to build structures and into pavers (great for patios!)  This is not a new concept, as buildings have been constructed from Earth for thousands of years including, according to recent evidence, the Pyramids.  These bricks can potentially be used as a portion of the tunnel lining itself, which is typically built from concrete. Since concrete production accounts for 4.5% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, earth bricks would reduce both environmental impact and tunneling costs. For more information contact:

Neuralink

Neuralink is developing ultra high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect humans and computers. We are looking for exceptional engineers and scientists. No neuroscience experience is required: talent and drive matter far more. We expect most of our team to come from other areas and industries. We are primarily looking for evidence of exceptional ability and a track record of building things that work. All positions are full time and based in San Francisco. For positions not listed, you can reach us at jobs@neuralink.com.

Political views

“I’m somewhere in the middle, socially liberal and fiscally conservative.” Following Mr. Donald Trump’s inauguration, Mr. Elon Musk expressed approval of President Trump’s choice of Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State and accepted an invitation to appear on a panel advising President Trump.  “The more voices of reason that the President hears, the better.” Mr. Elon Musk subsequently resigned in June 2017, due to his work load with Tesla, his children and SpaceX.

Lobbying

SpaceX has spent over $4 million USD on lobbying Congress since it was established in 2002 and doled out more than $800,000 USD in political contributions” to Democrats and Republicans. Mr. Elon Musk himself has donated roughly $725,000 USD to various campaigns since 2002. In 2004, he contributed $2,000 USD to President George W. Bush’s reelection campaign, $100,000 USD to Barack Obama’s reelection campaign and donated $5,000 USD to Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, who represented Florida. Mr. Elon Musk and SpaceX gave out roughly $250,000 USD in the 2012 election cycle.” Additionally, SpaceX hired former Republican Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott to represent the company, via the Washington-based lobbying group Patton Boggs LLP. Alongside Patton Boggs LLP, SpaceX uses several other outside lobbying firms, who work with SpaceX’s own lobbyists.

Mr. Elon Musk was a supporter of the U.S. political action committee (PAC) FWD.us, which was started entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg and advocates for immigration reform. However, in May 2013, Musk publicly withdrew his support.

Manifest Destiny

Mr. Elon Musk admitted to praying before his Falcon 1 launch, asking “any entities that [were] listening” to “bless [the] launch.” When asked whether he believed “religion and science could co-exist,” Musk replied “probably.”

Artificial intelligence (AI)

Mr. Elon Musk speaks frequently with regard to the potential dangers of artificial intelligence, declaring it “the most serious threat to the survival of the human race. AI as “[humanity’s] biggest existential threat,” further stating, “I’m increasingly inclined to think that there should be some regulatory oversight, maybe at the national and international level, just to make sure that we don’t do something very foolish.

Mr. Elon Musk is the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and a co-founder of several other companies. This conversation is part of the Artificial Intelligence podcast. The series includes leading researchers in academia and industry, including CEO’s and CTO’s of automotive, robotics, AI, and technology companies. See the comments I make in the introduction to this video below in text form.

Comments Made in Video Introduction: This conversation is part of the artificial intelligence podcast. The series includes leading researchers in academia and industry, including CEO’s and CTO’s of automotive, robotics, AI, and technology companies. This conversation happened after the release of the paper from our group at MIT on driver functional vigilance during use of Tesla’s Autopilot. The Tesla team reached out to me offering a podcast conversation with Mr Musk. I accepted, with full control of questions I could ask and choice of what is released publicly. I ended up editing out nothing of substance.

I respect Mr. Elon Musk as I do all other leaders and engineers I’ve spoken with. We agree on some things and disagree on others. My goal as always with these conversations is to understand the way the guest sees the world. One particular point of disagreement in this conversation was the extent to which camera-based driver monitoring will improve outcomes and for how long it will remain relevant for AI-assisted driving. As someone who works on and is fascinated by human-centered AI, I believe that if implemented and integrated effectively, camera-based driver monitoring is likely to be of benefit in both the short-term and the long-term.

In contrast, Mr. Elon Musk and Tesla’s focus is on the improvement of Autopilot such that its statistical safety benefits override any concern of human behavior and psychology. Mr. Elon Musk and I may not agree on everything, but, I deeply respect the engineering and innovation behind the efforts that he leads. My goal here is to catalyze a rigorous, nuanced, and objective discussion in industry and academia on AI-assisted driving, one that ultimately makes for a safer and better world.

Despite this, Mr. Elon Musk has previously invested in DeepMind, an AI firm, and Vicarious, a company working to improve machine intelligence. In January 2015, he donated $10 million to the Future of Life Institute, an organization focused on challenges posed by advanced technologies. He is the co-chairman of OpenAI, a nonprofit artificial intelligence research company.

Mr. Elon Musk was once asked whether he thinks humans live in a computer simulation, to which he answered:

The strongest argument for us probably being in a simulation I think is the following: 40 years ago we had Pong – two rectangles and a dot. That’s where we were. Now 40 years later we have photo realistic, 3 dimensional simulations with millions of people playing simultaneously and it’s getting better every year. And soon we’ll have virtual reality, we’ll have augmented reality. If you assume any rate of improvement at all, then the games will become indistinguishable from reality, just indistinguishable.

P” is for Philanthropy

Mr. Elon Musk is chairman of the Musk Foundation, which focuses its philanthropic efforts on providing solar-power energy systems in disaster areas.
